“If we can scale AI for better use, it can make the world a better place rather than just your daily personal life.”
This bonus episode gave us the chance to highlight a fresh perspective on AI from someone who’s just beginning her career and already making a meaningful impact. Our guest, Marina Frayre, is a Redox intern and an incoming senior at Dartmouth College, double majoring in computer science and environmental science. Her projects reminded us that innovation doesn’t always come from the top. It often begins quietly, in unexpected places.
Marina shared how she developed automated workflows for indigenous communities in New Zealand, using Python scripts to analyze satellite and drone images. The outcome was real-time insights into environmental health that respected cultural knowledge and gave communities ownership over their data. She also explained her research looked into how large language models handle emotionally complex healthcare topics. Her work shed light on both the promise and pitfalls of AI in sensitive, high-stakes situations.
And if that wasn’t enough, Marina also went to Namibia, where she combined fieldwork and machine learning to study tree pod dynamics critical for food security. Her passion for weaving together technology, conservation, and human needs was inspiring.
There is something to note in the way Marina sees AI as more than a convenience tool. She has shown that it can be a force to create positive global change. Listening to Marina, it’s hard not to feel hopeful about the intersection of AI, healthcare, and environmental science.
