“Security needs to continue to function regardless of that leader being there or not.”

Leadership transitions can feel disruptive, especially in security. When the person responsible for protecting the organization decides to move on, it naturally raises questions. What happens to the program? What happens to the team? What happens if something goes wrong during the change?

In this conversation, we stepped back and looked at things to consider during a security leadership transition. The first priority is pretty straightforward. Security doesn’t pause. Incidents still happen and alerts still fire. The team still needs clarity on who to escalate to and how decisions get made. That means documentation cannot live in one person’s head. Access cannot depend on a single individual. Processes need to exist before they are urgently needed.

We talked about practical safeguards like shared password management, documented workflows, and clear escalation paths. These are not just good habits. They are what keep a security function stable when leadership changes.

There is also opportunity in these moments. A new leader brings a fresh lens. Risk registers can be revisited. Priorities can be reassessed. Longstanding processes can be questioned. Even the outgoing leader can reflect on what should have been structured differently.

Transitions are rarely perfect. But when security is built to function beyond any one individual, change becomes manageable. In some cases, it becomes a chance to reset, refine, and strengthen what is already in place.
